Secretary's Report

Dear members,

It gives me great pleasure to present you the annual report of the Indian Society for Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering, Bangalore Chapter for the period April 2003 - March 2004.

The second AGM of the chapter was held on 22 May 2003, which was well attended. The deliberations of the AGM were followed by a Technical Lecture on "Nano Materials" by Prof. K. Chattopadhyay, Chairman, Materials Research Centre, IISc, Bangalore.

Dr.T.Pradeep Associate Professor, Dept. of Chemistry and Regional Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre, IIT, Madras delivered a Lecture on 'Metal Nonoparticles: Chemistry, Novel Materials and Sensors', on 27th June 2003. This talk covered the work in the recent past on metal nano particles and related systems. Recent work on flow sensors with nano particles was outlined.

A lecture on 'The Performance Evaluation and Modeling of Braided Composites' was delivered by Prof. Ajit D. Kelkar, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Centre for Advanced Material and Smart Structures, North Carolina A&T State University Greensboro, USA on 22nd July 2003.

Dr. Peter Sittner Institute of Czech Republic presented a lecture on 17th Nov.2003 on 'Non Contact Technologies for Evaluation of Shape Memory Alloy Behavior'.

A Technical Discussion & Presentation was scheduled on 24th November 2003 with Mr. Leonard Major, Head of Technical Services from M/s. Rohn GmbH & Co., Germany at the HRD Conference Hall, ISAC.

The chapter in collaboration with the Department of Aerospace Engineering, IISc and AR&DB successfully conducted the INCCOM-II and XII NASAS with the theme of "Advances in Composites" at J.N.Tata Auditorium Complex, IISc, Bangalore on 5th & 6th of September 2003. The conference was co-sponsored by HAL, Dept. of Atomic Energy, NUMURA Foundation Japan and Indian Space Research Organisation.

Shri N.R. Mohanty, Chairman, HAL was the Chief Guest and Prof.M.L. Munjal, IISc presided over the inaugural function. In this session the prestigious C.V.Joga Rao Memorial Lecture and Sri.Vijay Zaveri Memorial Lecture titled, 'Towards Advanced Composite Technology'. and 'Composite Application in UAV Airframes', were delivered by Shri Prahlada, Director, DRDL, Hyderabad and Dr K.A. Jacob, Scientist ADE, Bangalore respectively. The conference included fifty contributed papers from Aerospace and Non Aerospace Agencies. These lectures were presented in six sessions scheduled in three parallel sections over two days. The conference featured an exclusive plenary and interactive student sessions both of which were well received.

The wealth of information contained in the proceedings of the Conference will serve the technical community actively involved in the area of composites as a useful reference and provide direction for future development in this important area. Besides this, during the conference a successful exhibition was organized so as to provide for interaction of the participants with industries, suppliers, dealers and marketing agencies. Overall, the conference was a highly successful event. During this event, the chapter set a trend in organizing the AGM of the Executive Board, ISAMPE in cohesion with the main Board.
A sensational talk on 'Dielectric Elastomer Artificial Muscles for Actuators, Generators and Sensors' was delivered by Dr. Harsha Prahlad of SRI International Mento Park, California USA on 12th January 2004.

With constant encouragement by the main board and leading organizations like NAL, HAL, ADA, CEMILAC, CABS, IISc, TIFAC and with the new executive committee in place, the Chapter is poised to look forward for yet another eventful year.
