The inaugural function was presided by Dr. P.S. Nair, Director ISAMPE and Deputy Director Indian Space Research Organization Satellite Centre Bangalore, Dr. S. Sankaran, Director ISAMPE and Head Composite Technology Centre Aeronautical Development Establishment Bangalore and Prof. Kripa Shankar, Deputy Director Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. The chief guest of the function was Dr. K.U. Bhaskar Rao, Distinguished Scientist and Director Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment Kanpur. The programme was witnessed by Prof. G. N. Mathur, Ex Director DMSRDE Kanpur, Prof. K. Muralidhar, Head Department of Mechanical Engineering IIT-Kanpur, Prof. Jitendra Kumar, Head Materials Science Programme IIT-Kanpur, Prof. NGR Iyengar, Ex-Head Department of Aerospace Engineering IIT-Kanpur, Dr. R.K. Singh, Additional Director DMSRDE, Dr. D.K. Setua, Additional Director DMSRDE and large number of scientists, academicians and practicing engineers from Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology Lucknow, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Kanpur, DMSRDE Kanpur, Indian Air force Kanpur, Kanpur University, Harcourt Butler Technological Institute Kanpur and IIT- Kanpur.

snapThe day’s programme was started with a prayer and followed by welcome address given by Prof. Kamal K. Kar, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Programme IIT-Kanpur. He pointed out that the applications of advanced materials in aerospace, automobile, civil, defence and railways are ever growing. The extensive works in field of advanced composite materials are being carried out in various research and development laboratories and industries located in Kanpur like DMSRDE, HAL, Air force, HBTI, Kunpur University, CPET Lucknow, GSVM medical college and IIT-Kanpur. These professionals have been working hard in the field of composite materials, smart materials, electronic materials, polymeric materials, biomaterials, high strength steel alloys, aluminium alloys, structural materials, functionally graded materials and multifunctional materials for space and allied applications. In this context it is important to have Kanpur Chapter of ISMPE to raise awareness of our annual gatherings and our global professional activities in the world outside. He expressed his sincere gratitude on behalf of members of ISAMPE Kanpur Chapter to ISAMPE for mental support and encouragements in this regard.

Dr. S. Sankaran, Head Composite Technology Centre Aeronautical Development Establishment Bangalore introduced about ISAMPE and its activities in past. He pointed out the potential of using ISAMPE as a forum for interaction and information sharing especially in advanced materials and the awards given by ISAMPE in the field of development of materials and process engineering, FRP composites and smart technology development. Presently ISAMPE has Chapters at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Trivandurm, Pune and Coimbatore. This Kanpur Chapter will be the sixth chapter.

This was followed by lighting of the lamp and inauguration the ISAMPE Kanpur Chapter by Dr. K.U. Bhaskar Rao, Director DMSRDE Kanpur. Dr. Rao in his inaugural address emphasizes the need for more collaborative work between the defence labs, academic institutes and practicing professionals. He also mentioned many success stories in the recent and past, which has happened in India.  During his speech he had thro light on many of the new research area of interest in composites like functionally graded materials, nanocomposites etc. He also suggested to create a data bank on advanced materials for shearing of knowledge.

snapThis was followed by announcing of the first Executive Committee Members of ISAMPE Kanpur Chapter by Dr. P.S. Nair, Deputy Director (Mechanical Systems Area), ISRO Satellite Centre, Bangalore.Prof. Kamal K. Kar, Chairman, ISAMPE Kanpur Chapter, presented the upcoming events i.e., one day workshop on functionally graded materials, one week QIP course on carbon nanotubes, and INCCOM-6 and International Conference on Future Trends in Composite Materials and Processing with a theme “Innovations in Composites for the New Century” for the year of 2007.

The first conference announcement and release of brochure were done by Prof. Kripa Shankar, Deputy Director IIT Kanpur. This is the sixth national and first international ISAMPE conference. In his speech he stressed upon the importance and the role of professional societies to bride the gap between the research labs and academic institutes. He presented the success stories of professional societies, which are placed at IIT Kanpur.
